Judging Criteria
Each entry will be judged upon:
- Originality: The writing, acting, directing, and editing will be judged on the originality and creativity they exhibit. How much thought was behind the film? What made this film really stand out?
- Cinematography: Did the director’s choices for shot and angles, lighting. Did they try to change ‘things’ up or were the shots static? How was the film visually?
- Storytelling: Entries will be judged on their use of structure to communicate a story. This includes character development, plot, pace, suspense etc.
- Use of the Medium: Digital video, particularly in the short subject form, offers the producer/director the opportunity to economically shoot an amazing short. The best short films are those that completely embrace their medium and can take an audience to the next level using artistry, understanding, and meaningful experimentation.
- Production Value: While the proper use of lighting, sound, music, visual and sound effects can always enhance an audience’s viewing experience, greater weight will be given to creativity, originality, and storytelling.
- Editing: Does the film flow seamlessly from scene to scene. Has the editor utilized his or her craft to create emotional responses from the audience. Does the film have a stylistic flare.
- Film as art: Did the film have an artistic quality, or a more commercial feel? Is there purpose behind the piece?
